The Dojo Philosophy
The original JoBu Shin Kan was opened officially February 1, 1987. Since then it has been
growing and evolving steadily. In 2003 Professor Estes left Eureka
California and moved north to Gresham Oregon where he opened JoBu Shin Kan Hoku.
The original dojo was left in the care of Sensei Jon Sylvia and Prof. Estes
carried the name with him adding Hoku (north) to differentiate between the two
schools. The school name, JoBu Shin Kan, was chosen
because it reflect Estes Sensei's understanding of the Esoteric Principles of
DanZan Ryu Jujutsu, as put forth by the Founder, Prof. Okazaki.
JoBu Shin Kan translates to Superior Martial Spirit Hall or more broadly, School
of the Strong Martial Spirit. Martial, as used in this context, is to stop
conflict! Master Okazaki taught that DanZan Ryu was first a way for the
development of the Perfection of Character and second a Self Defense System. To
quote from the Esoteric Principles:
"Whatever the trials or dangers, even Hell under
the upraised sword, remain calm and remember the doctrine imparted to you by
your teacher...Only by cultivating a receptive state of mind, without
preconceived ideas or thoughts, can one master the bold secret art of reacting
spontaneously and naturally without hesitation and without purposeless
resistance."
From a martial point of view, this state assures complete success
self-defensively because you react from a clear mind, a mind not encumbered with
the stains of the ego and it's aspects.
Then self-defense is a simple matter, because all of one's awareness can be
directed to the task at hand instead of being scattered by such things as fear,
desire to win at all costs, prejudice, etc. You then become free to make
choices.
The purpose of the JoBu Shin Kan then is to teach you to discipline yourself
until you control your mind. Not allowing your mind to control you. Once
you can achieve this state of training, then you can achieve Excellence in
everything you do. Excellence in personal development, perfection of character,
behavior and attitude.
Our mission at the JoBu Shin Kan is to help each student achieve their
individual potential through Jujutsu. Jujutsu instruction should therefore be
seen primarily as a means to a desirable end, not as an end in itself.
